Female founders are still fighting a battle.
A sobering diversity-based fact comes from a 2019 Fast Company article titled, “Women Founders Have It Tough. Women in Hard Tech Have it Tougher.”
“Women-led companies have raised less than 3% of U.S. venture capital dollars, a number that has remained stubbornly fixed even as the number of firms and the total dollars invested has grown in recent years. For women in “deep” tech companies, it’s an even tinier fraction.”
3%... What! Really?!
As a female founder, myself, I just can’t let this continue. How about you?
My thoughts are to not dwell on the negative. That never accomplishes anything.
Instead, we need to set our sights on a more positive future.
Let’s focus on actionable steps to change this.
We can start by calling attention to the venture organizations that are fighting for diversity.
Those that are actively seeking a stronger female presence among their deep-tech startups.
Such is the case with On Deck Deep Tech (ODDT).
They have been emphatically vocal about the need for gender diversity amongst the founders building our deep tech future.
When they reached out to me for help in spreading the message to more potential female deep tech builders, I knew it is a cause I can get behind.
Kudos to the leaders at ODDT for not just talking about diversity, but doing something about it.
ODDT’s programs offer the following benefits to all startups. They would be especially thrilled to have more female founders, operators and advisors join the fellowship.
1) Community - Discover co-founders, early hires, advisors, and top-tier talent among the pre-vetted pool of talent.
2) Educational Sessions - Learn how to acquire funding, manage IP, secure LOIs, and much more.
3) Group Office Hours - Gain access to knowledge sharing, brainstorm, and get unblocked when at an impasse for innovation.
4) Mastermind sessions - Collaborate with other ambitious leaders, share challenges, get feedback, and gain accountability.
The ODDT application deadline for their next program session is October 2nd.
It’s time to change the future, and diversity is how we’ll get there.
Fun surprise for me: I'm doing the On Deck Deep Tech program.
I have no technical degrees and I'm working on a problem many believe is solved (it's not), but I want to spend my time building an optimistic sci-fi future.
At it's surface, Pantheon is a fitness app. And there are tons of those! But my objectives are more ambitious. Most fitness apps are just a way to track runs and watch workout videos, but unfortunately, that’s not enough. We want to build something deeper.
Our population is in a dangerous place. 77% of people don't get the *minimum* recommended amount of exercise. That's only 21 minutes per day of moderate activity! Yet the average Tik Tok users spends 52 minutes per day watching other people dance. Why the discrepancy?
If you ask investors, they'll say the fitness market is crowded. But crowded doesn't mean effective. Clearly, the stuff that's out there doesn't work. This is because fitness apps are stuck in 2010. If you want to see modern product-design in action, look at the apps that want you to gamble, sit on your couch, and eat fast food. Those products are incredibly effective.
There's a war going on for your brain. The tech that preys on your vices is in the AI Age, but that same tech isn't aligned with promoting your virtues. If you're struggling to do something good for yourself, know that you're fighting against it with sticks.
There's a reason the LinkedIn feed is algorithmic, even though most users seem to hate it. Algorithmic feeds are great at getting you to scroll one more time and see one more ad.
👨🏻‍🔬James Sinka calls it "AI that makes you click."
All successful consumer tech is AI that makes you click. Instagram's product is ML-driven addiction, and the pictures are just a medium: Instagram wants people to take pictures only because that gets us to spend more time on the app. But their AI is so good, it turned everyone into a photographer.
Sean and I are building Pantheon to arm you with your own AI brain weapon. We're building an addiction engine just like everyone else. Our medium, however, is your self-improvement. We're building AI that makes you move.
I was surprised to get the invitation from James and Abhijeet. I'm building a fitness company, not rockets. But if we're going to solve the health crisis of our day, we should be going at it with all the tech we have, not just another app.
